While American, Coalition, and Iraqi troops suffer hardship, wounds, and death in an effort to stabilize a struggling young democracy in war-torn Iraq, another group: safely cradled in luxurious offices - here and abroad - is doing its level best to promote the notion of civil war, so it can put its ideas into practice.
That group, which calls itself "Goals for Americans" , is dedicated to the idea of "Balkanizing" Iraq : of turning the new republic into 3 competing sub-states - vaguely modeled on the European Union,and having a central government in Baghdad.
The three "republics" would be Shi'ite, Sunni, and Kurdish,and would, per the GFA plan ,"share equitably" in the oil resources of Iraq.
Here's their "roadmap".
The GFA plan is also known as the Biden Plan (after Delaware's Democratic Senator, Joseph Biden ) ; but, as the GFA website makes plain , it is Biden who has "signed on" to their plan - and not the other way around.
What does Goals for Americans stand for. They say they stand for this.
It's also pretty clear they stand for this....and that they like Hamas.
In fact, if you look over their "editorial positions" , it is plain they are "Arabist" in outlook , and that they seem to have problems with the continuing survival of Israel.
Ah, but enough about them. What about their Great Plan ?
Suppose we did tell Iraq it now had to split into three lesser republics - 'cause we said so, that's why - what sorts of wonderful things might happen ?
1. The Government of Iraq might very well tell us to roll our little plan into a tight scroll and "stick it where the sun don't shine". (Then, I guess,we'd have to force them to comply...maybe use troops on them.)
2. Asssuming Iraq went along with plan , I imagine the Shi'ites would invite Iran to come in and provide them with "security and guidance". The Sunnis would look at that ,and re-install a Syrian-sponsored Ba'athist government - just for self-defense. The Kurds (as usual) would be left holding the short end of the stick ,and would be forced to throw in with the Sunnis. (Wow ! What an improvement !!)
2. The administration of those oil revenues would be handled out of Baghdad-presumably by administrators friendly to GFA - who would see to it the Iraqi Cash Cow was well and properly milked, and that the richest cream was skimmed off for the benefit of International Law specialists,suppliers, reconstruction brokers,"expediters" (Middle East - speak for extortionists) ,smiling Princes of the Saudi Dynasty (Yes,they have investments in that oil too ! ) , and truly oleaginous politicians - at least one of whom might be running for President.
It's easy to see why GFA might actively encourage the notion of civil war in Iraq.
That's not the same thing as providing active support - but it can be just about as effective. Keep telling anyone who will listen that a country is "drifting hopelessly into civil war" ,and, sooner or later , your "prophecy" will be self-fulfilling...because people in Iraq watch TV ,and read newspapers and magazines as avidly as we do - as the folks at GFA damned well know !
Goals for Americans -or- Goals for Cynical Well-placed Elitists ?
